The Athi Kapiti ecosystem continues to serve as a critical wildlife dispersal area and as it is currently, most of the animals in Nairobi National Park have moved outside the park and are now in the Kitengela. In order to take stock of wildlife in the Athi Kapiti, FoNNaP, together with other conservation partners including The African Conservation Centre, Kenya Wildlife Service, International Livestock Research Institute, The Wildlife Foundation, Africa Wildlife Foundation, Wildlife Direct, The Athi Kapiti Conservancy, Olerai Conservancy and the communities living south of Nairobi National Park will help community members carry out a Wet Season Game Count this month. An aerial and ground count will be conducted as from 5th June 2011, where we will start by taking stock of the game in Nairobi National Park. We will then conduct the aerial and ground counts in subsequent weeks.
The purpose of this count is to establish wildlife movements in the dispersal area, their distribution, variability and abundance. Plans are already underway and we hope to kick start the exercise as scheduled.
It is estimated that the whole exercise will cost approximately KES. 450,000.00. So far we have managed to raise KES. 75,000.00 from donations as follows:
Wildlife Direct (National Geographic Big Cat Initiative: Cheetah Project) KES. 40,000.00
Friends of Nairobi National Park KES. 20,000.00
Paula Kahumbu KES. 10,000.00
Zaheeda Suleiman KES. 2,000.00
Doris Schaule KES. 2,000.00
Kimberley Maunder KES. 1,000.00
We would like all our friends to be part of this important exercise and you can help. We urgently need to raise funds for this. If you would like to contribute towards this initiative, please send contributions to FoNNaP through MPESA on +254 723 690 686 or you can stop by our office at Kenya Wildlife Service Headquarters, Langata Road, on Kifaru Court just next to the Nairobi National Park main gate and make your contribution. Any amount contributed towards this cause will be highly appreciated. You can also help by spreading the word to all your friends.
We will be sure to share with you and the general public the results of the count and the final reports. Looking forward to your support.
